Is day care becoming night care?

It’s called Family Day Care but increasingly day care is becoming night care. A recent survey by Family Day Care Australia of more than 300 schemes showed that 12% of educators are looking after children overnight and 14.4% of educators provide weekend care.

This reflects the flexible working arrangements that many parents have. Traditional child care settings don’t always meet the needs of parents who work shifts and/or don’t have family close by to help out.

Providing night care poses some unique issues for family day care educators. We’d love to hear some stories of how these children fit into your families, the activities they’re included in or outings they may take with you. Do you face any regulatory burden as a family day care educator?
