Safety for Family Day Care

Safety is a critical issue for any childcare service. For family day carers there are likely to be extra safety matters to consider in and around the home. These matters may be in addition to the extra regulations covering things like safety glass and water hazards.    The “Family Day Care Safety Guidelines” booklet published by Kidsafe NSW and has loads of information on many things including play equipment, furniture, stairs, windows, balconies, swings, trampolines, prams, cots, stoves, heaters and cars. Each topic is referenced against the current Australian Standard as at August 2012. Of course all services, including those in NSW, should check these are still current and there are no extra requirements by, for example, their local council.   What safety issues cause the biggest problems for family day carers?  What are the things new carers should watch out for that they may not initially think about?
