The service actively cares for its environment
Quality Area 3 is all about caring for the environment, learning about our impact on the environment and how we can build a sustainable future. Sustainability is not so much a lifestyle choice but a way of living. Implementing environmentally sound practices encourages children to question and investigate their surroundings, and provides a wealth of opportunities for spontaneous and intentional learning. Even the simplest observation can start the learning process, for example, what happens to uneaten food scraps. This could lead into discussions and projects on composting and worm farms. Talking about rain and what happens when it doesn’t rain can lead to activities like installing rain gauges, rainwater tanks and drip irrigation in garden beds. It can also lead to discussions about different types of plants and how much water each type needs.
There are so many exciting things educators can do to implement sustainable practices at their service. Have a look at the NSW Early Childhood Environmental Education Network for some great resources and ideas.
We’d love to get your stories about the exciting things that are happening in your service.
