{"id":550,"date":"2020-08-19T07:07:29","date_gmt":"2020-08-19T07:07:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.centresupport.com.au\/victorianchildcarecentre\/2020\/08\/19\/health-problems-should-also-be-considered\/"},"modified":"2020-08-25T06:57:33","modified_gmt":"2020-08-25T06:57:33","slug":"health-problems-should-also-be-considered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.centresupport.com.au\/victorianchildcarecentre\/2020\/08\/19\/health-problems-should-also-be-considered\/","title":{"rendered":"Health problems should also be considered"},"content":{"rendered":"[vc_row el_class=&#8221;bg-section1 autism&#8221;][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]While we may suspect or know a child is on the spectrum, we should always make sure the child is not affected by any underlying health problems.<\/p>\n<p>Arrange a meeting with all relevant educators and staff to discuss the possible causes of the behaviour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First <\/strong>&#8211; Consider physical\/medical issues eg<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hearing &#8211; can child hear properly, are child\u2019s ears infected, inflamed, blocked<\/li>\n<li>Throat \u2013 is it inflamed\/constricted<\/li>\n<li>Nose \u2013 can child breathe properly, are sinuses infected\/inflamed<\/li>\n<li>Eyes \u2013 can child see properly, is there conjunctivitis etc<\/li>\n<li>Bottom-does child need medical attention for nappy rash<\/li>\n<li>Bowel \u2013 is child constipated \u2013 this can cause pain and fear of going to the toilet<\/li>\n<li>Scratching \u2013 does child have nits\/lice, allergies which need treating<\/li>\n<li>Eczema \u2013 is there a rash causing pain, scratching and discomfort<\/li>\n<li>Asthma \u2013 are there breathing issues causing stress for the child<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Second<\/strong>&#8211; Consider environmental issues eg<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Diet \u2013 what is child eating, is there too much sugar, is at served at the wrong times, is it contributing to child\u2019s allergies, is child eating enough, has child had breakfast<\/li>\n<li>Sleep &#8211; is child sleeping at night, is child being forced to sleep at service instead of rest\/quiet activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Looking at health issues in practice<\/h2>\n<p>The first thing educators do is look for out of the ordinary explanations, like illness, new baby at home, grandparents visiting etc. If these events are short episodes, educators shouldn\u2019t have concerns and will work together to support the child through the change.<\/p>\n<p>However, if there is an untreated illness like an ear infection, educators will see an increase in behaviours displayed over a period oftime..
